1500 Sites and Counting (and welcome, Hulu)

Over the weekend (late Friday to be specific), we passed another interesting milestone here at Vodpod: our members have collected videos from over 1500 different web sites. I’ve included the Top 100 sites at the bottom of this post (we’re working on make the full list available in an interesting way over the coming weeks, stay tuned).

One way to think about this development: not as 1500 video sharing sites, but rather 1500 web sites with video sharing.

Where Can I Collect Videos for My Vodpod or Blog?

Vodpod members have collected videos from nearly 1500 different sites on the web. The list grows by 5 to 10 sites every day.

So what sites work with Vodpod? Simply, any site that provides videos (typically and preferably in the “Flash” format) with an “embed code.”

The “embed code” is a short string of text that provides a way for you to add a video to your Vodpod, or your blog. Here’s what part of an embed code from The Daily Show site looks like:

embed src=’http://www.thedailyshow.com/video_player/view/default/swf.jhtml’ quality=’high’ …

If you see that the site provides embed codes for its videos, the easiest way to add the video to your collection on Vodpod, or post it to your blog, is with our “Save to Vodpod” button. If this doesn’t “grab” the video, copy the embed code and paste it into the form we provide on the “Save to Vodpod” popup. Further instructions on how to do that are here.

You can also copy the embed code, and paste it into “Add Video” page for your pod.

New Daily Show Site

When we launched Vodpod ten months ago, we made a bet that there would be thousands of sites offering extensive libraries of video, probably in Flash, with support for embed codes to allow sharing on blogs and web sites like ours.

The new site launched by Comedy Central for the Daily Show today is one of the best examples yet of this future. A full archive going back to 1999, high quality clips, fully share-able on your Vodpod or your blog or website. Nice.

The “Save to Vodpod” or “Post to WordPress” Button Isn’t Working

Vodpod members have collected videos from over 4000 different sites using our browser button without a hitch.

But on some sites, because of the way they provide embed codes, our “Save to Vodpod” browser (or “Post to WordPress” version) can’t grab the embed code for the video you want to collect. Or, it might grab the wrong video.

Don’t panic if this happens! There is an easy workaround. You can usually copy the embed code from the site that provides the video, and paste it into the window.

When button can’t grab the video embed code, you’ll see a window that looks like this:

(Or, if it grabs the wrong video or another object, click the “video missing” link to bring up this form.)

Find and then copy the embed code for the video you’re trying to add, and paste it into the the form. The screenshot below shows what the form looks like with the embed code pasted in:

Then click the “preview” link to make sure you’ve gotten the right video:

Click to preview the video, to make sure it’s working fine. If it is, you should be all set to save the video to Vodpod, or to post it to your blog. Write your comment or blog post, add some tags, and hit the “Save” button!

If this doesn’t work, you can always send feedback to us: feedback@vodpod.com.

Also, if you’re using our toolbar bookmarklet and not our browser extension, upgrade now. The browser extension is far more powerful, and can grab embed codes from more sites.

Welcome back, Chris

Back in early January, just a few weeks after our service launched, one of the first people to try our new service left, and mentioned he was stopping his use of the service briefly in a blog post titled “Web 2.0 cull.”

When you’re a small startup, you sweat the gain and loss of any and every member of your service. That was true when Vodpod was just 3 weeks old and we had only a thousands users; and it’s true now with nearly 200,000 registered users.

So we were delighted a week or so ago to see Chris return to Vodpod. He’s just written a great blog post about trying Vodpod again on his blog Nixon by Name.

Chris has also started a couple of great pods, check them out:

Chris Nixon’s videos — clips Chris has made

VodNoodles — random clips he’s found from around the Net

Best Music — some of chris’ favorite music videos
