Vodpod at One

It was a year ago today that we launched Vodpod with a goal to help people collect videos from 1000s of sites on the web; and to share their collections with their friends, on their blogs, or on their social networks.

To celebrate, we thought about throwing a party but decided to build new some new features.

Today we’ve released important updates to our service that provide more powerful and flexible ways for our members to share their collections on their blogs; and new ways to find the best videos through our members’ collections:

1. Four brand new widgets for bloggers, in various forms and sizing, all with “paging” so your readers can surf through your entire Vodpod collection, without having to leave your blog.

2. New and improved search.

3. An expanded “set of ways” to help you to discover videos through our members and their collections.

4. An API, and the first product built off of it, an advanced video gallery plugin for WordPress.

We’ve had a blast this past year. Thanks to all of you who have tried Vodpod, especially those of you who amaze us and amuse us with your great video collections.

New (and beautiful!) widgets for your blog

We want to build the perfect video widget for bloggers. So in that quest, we’ve made four new types and styles of widgets, all with new and enhanced functionality.

First, we have a new single-video-sized widget, designed for the upper right (or left!) corner of your blog. Perfect for the space-conscious blogger.

Single Video Widget

Like all of our new widgets, you can “page” or “scroll” through the videos. Your blog readers can watch as many videos from your collection (whether it’s 1, 5, 10, 100 or 1000!) as they like, right from the comfort of your blog. “Don’t like what you’re watching? Next!”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have a new — and more advanced — “gallery style” widget.

Gallery Widget

This widget is designed to occupy most of a web page. This is for the blogger who wants to make their whole collection easily accessible in their blog.

The new gallery widget is available as a WordPress plugin developed by the talented and prolific Alex King, the first of what we hope will be many applications built off of our API. Or, you just need to copy a few lines of javascript to add it. More here. Quick word of caution — we call this widget advanced because it’s for those of you comfortable hacking a few lines of code.

Finally, we’ve updated our topbar and sidebar widgets as well — a new look, and both let your readers “page” through your collection.

Enjoy. You can see all of our widgets here.

API? Check. (Finally!)

Earlier this fall, we very quietly released a basic API on our Geekblog. Today, we’re announcing it more publicly.

Our brand-spanking-new gallery WordPress plugin built by Alex King is the first product made using the API.

Interested in making something of your own? Head off to the Vodpod Geekblog or to our API page for the details.
