Moderating Comments on Vodpod

We’ve tried to make Vodpod more engaging for visitors by allowing guests to comment on videos you collect at Vodpod.

Most of the time, people add interesting comments. Occasionally, guests visit and even add excellent comments. But not everyone out there has good manners, or good taste, and occasionally comments might get left on videos you collect that aren’t appropriate.

In the rare instances when this happens, you can “hide” the comment. Just go to the video page, mouse over the comment that is inappropriate, and click the “thumbs down” button:

comment_example_spam

This will have the effect of “hiding” the comment:

spam_after_comment_mod

Of course, because we’re a diverse video community, it’s important to strike the right balance with this tool. The “down mod” tool isn’t designed to exclude comments you disagree with; rather, you should use it only when the comment violates the overall ethos of our community here at Vodpod.

The most common examples see of comments that should get “down modded” are:

Spam — the comment includes a link that isn’t relevant, and is only provided to drive traffic

Inappropriate language — racial epithets, excessive swearing, personal insults

Jibberish — some people just type in jibberish to get a reaction

We hope you’ll use the tool — judiciously — to make Vodpod a more interesting community, a place where we allow people to express a wide range of views, but where we keep things civil and informed, too.

10,000 Sites and Counting

It’s been about six month since we last gave an update on the Vodpod Sitegeist — that is, the number and type of video sites from which our members collect video.

In that last post, at the end of December 2008, we noted that Vodpod Sitegeist was up to 6,239 sites. As of this morning, Vodpod members have collected videos from 10,020 different video sites. My calculator reports that that is 60% growth in just a little over six months.

We will update our embedcode.org Top 100 list later today. But what stands out to me is the predominance and continued proliferation of vertical, niche videos sites such as WorldStarHipHop, Kidstube, Sciencestage, Carhub.tv and Ted.com.

These are all examples from just the top 100 sites on the list — and give an insight into the sheer range and diversity of what we’re seeing overall.

Using the Vodpod Organizer to Publish a Set of Videos

Our Organizer is a really powerful tool if you want to quickly curate a set of videos to publish to a widget, VodSpot, or a video site powered by our API.

From your Vodpod home page, click the “organize your videos” link. This will bring up the organizer:

organizer

You can then use the organizer to quickly assemble a set of videos from your collection. Just shift + click to select the videos you want (or use search to refine your list first). Once you have selected the videos you want, you can then give them a specific tag (or tags), or move them into a separate collection.

Then, just setup a widget based on those tags (or, create a VodSpot module that points to those tags).

Collect Videos from 1000s of Sites

Vodpod is simply best way to collect and to keep track of your favorite videos on the web.

We have three powerful tools for collecting videos: a browser button; search; and a “blog importer” that automatically collects videos you post to your blog, share on Twitter, or favorite on YouTube.

You can collect videos from any site that offers Flash video and an embed code so enable sharing. Nearly 10,000 different sites at this point.

Once you’ve collected some videos, we make it easy to publish your collection anywhere you like. You’ll find widgets for your blog; applications for Facebook and Twitter; an API that lets you build most anything you’d like; a variety of RSS feeds, including ones so you can watch your collection on Boxee; and finally a simple, fun way to build your own video site, called Vodspot.

How to Edit, Delete, and Organize Your Videos

Want to edit or delete one of the videos you’ve collected? Or, want to organize the videos in your collection?

From your account page, just click the link to go to your collection:

From the your collection front page, you can click the “edit” link to edit or delete a specific video; or, click the “organize your videos” link at the top if you want to edit or delete multiple videos:

You can delete videos from the organizer, too. Just roll your cursor over the thumbnail of the video you want to delete, and you’ll see a trashcan icon in the upper right corner of the thumbnail. Click on the trashcan icon to delete the video.

If you want to batch organize your videos into tags (tags are basically like categories, but more flexible), just click the “organize tags” link at the bottom of the organizer. You’ll be able to drag-and-drop videos into the appropriate tag group, and also create new tags if you need them to organize your videos.

Thumbs Up!

We’ve simplified the way you can react or rate a video, and replaced our menu of “emoticons” with a simple thumbs up and thumbs down reaction. You’ll see the icons for this right below the video:

Just click the thumbs up (or down) to react to a video. You can, as always, give a more detailed reaction with a comment. In the coming months, we plan to make good and interesting use of the thumbs up (and down) data, so click away.

You can quick add videos right from the your home page, either by searching, or pasting in an embed code:

There are a number of other ways you can add videos to your pod, including our fabulously powerful browser button and blog importer.

YOUR ACTIVITY, OTHER PEOPLE’S ACTIVITY
Immediately underneath the search box, you’ll see your “Recent Activity” feed. This shows you your activity (when you add or comment on a video) as well as the activity by people you follow:

QUICK LINKS
On the right column, you’ll find a set of handy, quick links to help you manage your experience on Vodpod. The top area provides links to your collection (just click on the name), as well as quick links to see stats for that collection, to customize your collection page, or to organize your videos.

On the right column, you’ll also find handy links to manage the list of people you’re following (and see who is following you), invite friends, get a widget for your blog, or set up your blog importer, and to check out your neighbors (people who are collecting the same videos as you, and whom you might want to follow).

Vodpod Search, Fast and Easy

One of the easiest and fastest ways to add to your collection is with Vodpod search. You can search the more than 1 million videos collected on Vodpod from over 4000 sites; or, you can look for videos not yet in the collection on YouTube, Daily Motion, Myspace, Comedy Central and fifteen other popular video sites including blip.tv, Brightcove,

We just updated our search service, and it got easier and faster, still.

You can search on any page on Vodpod using the search box in the upper right corner:

We first show you Vodpod results:

With over 1 million videos collected from over 4000 different sites, there is a good chance we’ll have what you’re looking for.

Click on the video you want to watch, and we’ll take you to the video page. You can watch the video there, and you’ll find a wealth of other information about the video, including who else has collected it or posted it to their blog and you’ll see links to other, related videos.

If you want to add the video to your collection, just click the orange button below the video (or, you can always use your browser button):

If don’t see the video you want in the Vodpod results, try our “web results” tab. You’ll see up-to-date results from YouTube, Myspace, DailyMotion, Comedy Central and over a dozen other popular video sites in our “Featured sites” group at the top (including Hulu, blip.tv, Brightcove, Reuters with more sites coming soon).

You can “drill down” to see results from just a single site; just click the “see all” results link shown above for the site you want.

When you see a video you might want to add, click on the thumbnail. You’ll see a pop-up window, where you can watch the video, add a title, write a comment and add tags:

Click save when you’re done, and it’ll go in your Pod and onto your blog if you’re using a widget– and we’ll even give you a nice gold star when you’re first to add the video!

Vodpod Loves Your Blog, Let Us Count the Ways

If you’re a blogger, and regularly include video on your blog, you need to hook it up with Vodpod.

We can think of at least eight reasons why Vodpod and your blog are made for each other:

1. Widgets
Our fabulous widgets are a great way to share video via your blog. Your readers can browser through and watch your video collection from the comfort of your blog (whether it’s a collection of 5, 50 or 500 videos). We’ve got a full array of shapes, sizes, and configurations, and we’ve just announced a few more. And you can build your own if you like, with our API or our widget source code.

2. Blog Importer
We have some simple but powerful ways to collect videos, but among the most relevant for bloggers is our blog importer. It’s particularly useful if you already have a workflow for posting videos to your blog; all you have to do is enter your blog’s RSS feed, and we’ll add the videos you post to your collection on Vodpod automatically.

3. Post to Blog with Our Browser Button
Our orange browser button lets you save videos to your Vodpod collection with a click, from 1000s of sites. But sometimes you might want to post a video, too, not just share it through our widget. You can use our browser button to do that, too. With just a click, post a video to your blog; works on WordPress, Typepad, Blogger, Twitter and Tumblr. We also have a special version for WordPress.com bloggers.

4. Blog Trackbacks
Blogs (and bloggers!) love links. We got ‘em. When you use one of our widgets, or our “Post to blog” service, we’ll provide a track back from our video page. We want our visitors to find your blog!

5. Share on Other Platforms
We know many of you not only blog, but use services like Facebook, Twitter, or more recently FriendFeed. You can also hook up your Vodpod collection to those services, too. So, collect a video and it goes to your blog (if you have our widget installed), and Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, too, if you like. We also provide media RSS feeds for your collection, and that’ll enable you to hook up your Vodpod almost anywhere else.

6. Stats
Did you know you can see how many videos views you’re getting on your widget? With our stats, you can track that and more.

7. API
Like everything you’ve just read, but doesn’t quite fit your needs? Well go build whatever you want with our API. Our friends at NewTeeVee have done just that, launching a brand new site powered by our API.

8. Search and Discovery and Community
Finally, Vodpod is a great place to hang out, and discover new videos through other people. The best way to do that is to “follow” other members who have tastes and interests similar to yours; here are some tips on that.

Follow People on Vodpod and Discover New Videos

We have an amazing community of 1000s of video curators here at Vodpod, collecting videos on almost every topic imaginable, from 100s of countries around the globe.

And we firmly believe one of the best ways to find new videos is by “following” other members in our community.

When you “follow” someone on Vodpod, you track their activity in the news feed on your Vodpod home page, shown here:

Through your news feed, you’ll be able to track when they add videos, follow another member, or make a comment about a video someone else has added.

The key, of course, is finding good people to follow. If you’re unsure how to find good people to follow, here are five tips to help you out.

Once you find a Vodpod member with an interesting collection, it’s easy to follow them. On their member page, just click the “Follow” link in the upper right corner shown below:

You can also follow someone via the video page. Just click the follow link in the upper right corner above their videos:
